The Buffalo Botanical Gardens invites guests to this year’s “Night Lights at the Gardens.” Now through February 18th take a nocturnal stroll through tropic like temperatures and view the many displays in a new light.
Doors open at 6pm Wednesday through Saturday. Wednesday and Thursday the many illuminated exhibits can be viewed until 9pm and until 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays. The Buffalo Botanical Gardens are located at 2655 South Park Avenue in Buffalo, near South Park and Our Lady of Victory Basilica.
Admission to the event is $10.00 for adults, $8.00 for students and seniors, $5.00 for children 3 to 12 and under 3 is free. Tickets can be purchased onsite at the gift shop register in the front lobby. The phone number for The Botanical Gardens is (716) 827-1584.
This year’s event will also feature some special guests to add to the night time garden experience. On Friday February 3rd, Lazlo Hollyfeld, an all instrumental group will be playing original compositions during the light show. John & Mary, an original folk rock group, will be performing on Friday February 10th. The GAHU Drum Ensemble will wrap things up on February 17th. Originally from the Chautauqua area, their accomplished traditional percussion style will accent the lighting and soundscapes of the gardens.
The lighting displays are organized by Sitler HQ and Volt Vision. This is the same group who lit up the gardens last year and per the Botanical Gardens website helped to make last year’s event successful.
Holiday Valley Snow Tubing is located about four miles away from the Holiday Valley Ski Resort, on Route 242 in Ellicottville, New York. With 12 lanes and two handle tows, tubers can race down a snowy slope before catching a ride back to the top of the hill to do it again. (Beats walking up!)
There is a free shuttle service to and from Holiday ValleySki Resort for snow tubers convenience. Holiday Valley Ski Resorts address is 6557 Holiday Valley Road in Ellicottville. Lodging, skiing and other winter activities are available and are listed on their website home page.
The minimum age to tube is seven and riders must also be at least 42 inches tall. For those tuberswho aren’t quite ready for the big hill, there is a “Little Tubers Hill” designed just for them.
It gets chilly out there in the snow, so a warm up shack is on site, complete with a fireplace and snack bar. Don’t forget to bundle up and dress in layers to get the most out of your tubing experience. The Holiday Valley Snow Tubing site has a complete list of “what to wear” to keep guests warm and dry.
Holiday Valley Snow Tubing is open Thursdays and Fridays from 4pm to 9pm. On Saturdays and Sundays, tubing starts at noon and continues until 9pm. The rate for tubing varies by hour, all day or a seasonal pass. A two hour run is $16 and $18 for three hours. Tube all day for $24 or purchase a season pass for $75.00.

Friday January 13thwhy not visit Buffalo’s City Hall? Presented by Buffalo Tours, sightseers will be meeting in the lobby at noon. The tour is free and lasts approximately one hour. Saturday at 10:00 am Reinstein Woods offers a free public guided tour of the 292 acre complex. Tours are approximately 90 minutes long. On the southern border of Chestnut Ridge Park, there is a creek that is entwined in a rocky ravine. It is sometimes called Shale Creek, referring to the towering walls of sedimentary rocks, exposed from erosion. To others, the hike is known as the “Eternal Flame.”
Walking up stream awaits a natural spectacle not seen anywhere else in the area. This is a beautiful waterfall that cascades down over 30 feet of rock. While there are many incredible waterfalls in the Western New York area, this one is unique.
The decomposition within the shale has created natural gas, whose trademark sulfur smell can be noted throughout the creek bed area. Bubbles can be seen under the water from escaping pockets of gas, especially at the base of the waterfall.
Nestled inside a small cave under the waterfall is a sheltered area where the water usually overshoots. This is the gas well that once lit will maintain its fiery watch over the pool below, until the next time it is blown or washed out. Hikers may want to bring a lighter just in case the flame has gone out.
The walls of the ravine are thin, flat shale layers, left behind from when the Western New York area was underwater, one big sea. The different colors of shale indicate the composition of the rock. The browns, reds and greens indicate iron, while the black shale is suggestive of carbon deposits.
While hiking down to the Eternal Flame, there are many different types of trees and plant life. Informative signs have been placed along the trail for a self-guided tour. They explain the many different stages in which the forest continuously regenerates and recycles.The trail is marked well with small flames on the trees, leading the way.
For many years, the easiest access to the Eternal Flame was to park along Seufert Road, just off of Rte. 277 in Orchard Park. However, a new disc golf course called The Eternal Flame has recently opened and offers off street parking and a slightly shorter hike to the waterfall. A white fence denotes the course at 6121 Chestnut Ridge Roadand parking area, just a short drive past Seufert Road on Rte. 277. After hiking both trails, the Seufert Road trail takes hikers through the “road less traveled” with views of the woods that many don’t get the opportunity to see.
The difficulty for this hike would be moderate. The wooded trail leading to the creek is hilly and uneven in spots. The climb back up is a bit steep, so take your time. The hike is roughly an hour to an hour and ½. Water flow over the falls depends on the season. Spring usually produces a higher volume of water and during the dry summer months it may only be a trickle. Winter hiking is allowed, but sections of the creek will be icy and slippery, so be careful.

Step back into 1901, after the tragic events leading to the assignation of President McKinley during his visit to Buffalo. He was attending the the Pan Am Expo. In the Temple of Music McKinley was shot twice.Several days after the shooting the nation's 25th president died from gangrene. The Niagara Square is a monument to this devastating act. After the death of McKinley the United States needed a leader. Vice-President, Theodore Roosevelt made his way to Buffalo after McKinley's shooting.
The Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site, located at 641 Delaware Avenue in Buffalo, is where Theodore Roosevelt was sworn in as America’s 26th President. While it was a time of national mourning, President Roosevelt knew the importance of maintaining the stability of his country and took the Oath of Office.
The house where the inauguration took place was once owned by Ansley Wilcox and is often referred to as the Wilcox Mansion by many still today. The building has been restored in four areas covered in the available tours, as well as a permanent exhibit displaying the historic events at the site.
The museum is open year around by guided tours only. Tours are scheduled every hour on the half-hour, beginning at9:30 a.m. weekdays and12:30 p.m. weekends. The last tour is at 3:30 p.m. It is recommended that visitors call ahead at (716) 884-0095 on the day of the tour to check availability.

Looking for something fun to do, something different? Check out Sky Zone Trampoline Park. Located at 425 Cayuga Drive in Cheektowaga, New York, visitors can bounce their way to fun. This is an indoor trampoline park – there are trampolines even on the walls!
Besides the fun of jumping on the trampolines, there is a dodge ball court (on trampolines), a foam pit, an open jump court and a slam court, which lets fun seekers use the trampolines to slam dunk! There is also a special court for kiddies 5 and under. It is great exercise and helps those younger ones bounce off some of their extra energy.

Old Fort Niagara
On December 17th, Old Fort Niagara greets the holiday season with its annual Castle by Candlelight tour. The inside of the castle is completely lit by candles and historic characters tell stories from Christmas past.
Tickets to Castle by Candlelight are available at Old Fort Niagara for $8.00 a person. Visitors can arrive at the fort anytime between 7 and 8:30pm. Dress warm, as the historic fort is a bit drafty. (It will be cold). Guests are encouraged to bring flashlights along for the tour.

Elmwood Village ElmwoodVillage is a unique way to finish up holiday shopping and enjoy the creative window displays that line the Elmwood Village area. On Friday's throughout the holiday season, many of the shops will be open until 9pm to give shoppers a more convenient way to shop. Friday December 16th all are welcome to join others for an evening of caroling at the Universal Unitarian Church, located at 695 Elmwood Avenue. The event starts at 7pm. This is one of the annual holiday events that the Elmwood Village is known for. Every Saturday from 12pm to 4pm is Santa Saturdays. Santa will be roaming the streets of the Elmwood Village so if you see him, pose for a picture or give him your Christmas wish list. This is one activity the kids will love.
The Fairground Festival of Lights
The Fairground Festival of Lights in Hamburg will light up the night this holiday season. For $18.00 a carload, you not only get to drive through the vibrant light display; there is a holiday magic show, reindeer carriage rides and of course, Santa. Gates open at 5:30pm and runs through 9:30pm.
Save $3.00 off the gate entry fee by presenting an original Tops or Wendy’s receipt. Where else for $15.00 can you take the entire family out for an evening of fun?
From December 15th through December 23rd the Fairground Festival of Lights will be open nightly from 5:30pm to 9:30pm. The address for the Hamburg Fairgrounds is 5600 McKinley Parkway, but the Fairground Festival of Lights website says to use the South Park entrance. The only address for the South Park entrance is for the Hamburg Casino, but this should get you to the beginning of the light display if you are using a GPS to get there. The address listed is 5820 South Park Avenue in Hamburg.
Hyde Park
Hyde Park, located at 4343 Porter Road in Niagara Falls, New York is has a holiday light display called Hyde Park Holiday Light Trail. The United Way of Greater Niagara presents the Hyde Park Holiday Lights Trail. It is free to the public with over 50 festively illuminated spectacles. Open nightly through January, from 5pm to 10pm.
The third oldest zoo in America, the Buffalo Zoo was established in 1875. Originally, the space was intended to be a deer park on the corner of Delaware Park. As time progressed, people started donating animals to the space and permanent structures began being built to provide the animals with shelter.
300 Parkside Avenue in Buffalo is the address for the Buffalo Zoological Gardens. The telephone number is (716)837-3900. The zoo is open every day from 10:00am to 4:00pm. In January and February the zoo is closed on Monday and Tuesday. It also sits alongside Delaware Park. Delaware Park has golf and basketball. The park is a great place for a picnic or a stroll.
Admission to the Buffalo Zoo is free for those 23 months and younger, children 2-14 are $7.00, students and seniors are $8.00 and adult tickets cost $10.00. Parking is $3.50 in the lot next to the zoo. A token from the cashier needs to be obtained to exit the lot, so mention that you need to pay for parking at the admission gate. Carousel and train rides are $2.00 each.
The “Zootique” is the gift shop at the zoo. In case you forgot something like a sweatshirt or a hat stop by and peruse their wares. Stroller and wagon rental is also available at the Zootique in case the little ones are tired from the walk around the zoological gardens.
Food is available daily at The Beastro. Stop by for lunch or a mid-day snack with treats like popcorn, ice cream, soda and cotton candy. Other items available for purchase are hot dogs, hamburgers and French fries.
Over the years, this facility has changed hands from the City of Buffalo to a zoological preservation society. Since then, the primary focus is preservation and renewal. Improving structures and habitats aren’t the only things happening at the zoo. New exhibits, educational activities, a petting farm and an enclosed tropical rainforest exhibit taking visitors into the depths of the jungle.
While the Buffalo Zoo is a smaller facility, it gives an unmatched intimacy with the animals, getting up close with the many different animals in their enclosures. It makes a day with smaller children more enjoyable because just about everything in the zoo isn’t far away from wherever you are. Bathroom access is conveniently located near the concession stand. A small playground is nearby the eating area and the carousel can be seen from many different angles of the zoo.

The zoo is a great place to walk and visit, watching the animals, enjoying the stone built walls from older exhibits put together in the 1930’s mixed with fresh new exhibits that bring the gardens into the present. A day at the Buffalo Zoo is fun for all ages.

Serving Western New York since 1963, Sprague Brook Park is an Erie County park, camp ground and recreation area. 9674 Foote Road in Glenwood, NY is the location for the park, which includes more than 2,200 acres of reclaimed state and federal land.
In the summer season, Sprague Brook Park is a reasonably priced campground, featuring 123 campsites, 30 of which are electric. Ponds, playgrounds, tennis and hiking are just a few of the summer activities. The camping season may be over for the year, but the park remains open. Admission to the park is free and there are trails that can be used year around.
Snowmobile trails, cross country skiing, and snowshoeing are popular winter time activities. There is a great sledding hill located near the newly built casino so bring a sled or toboggan!

Another unique feature at Sprague Brook Park is the Vietnam Veteran Memorial Park. Over the years, an overgrown field with a pond along the back edge of the property has been transformed into a moving tribute to those who served in Vietnam and those who never returned. Just taking a moment to reflect in this serene setting is a humbling experience, making the trip to the park well worth it any time of the year.

Our Lady of Victory Basilica, known in short as OLV Basilica, is located on the corner of Ridge Road and South Park Avenue in South Buffalo. Completed in 1925, Father Baker, the buildings founder and patriarch helped to build this magnificent piece of architecture. The most incredible part is it was debt free after it was built. Father Baker reached out to the community and asked people to buy a brick for $10.00 each. And it worked!
Besides the incredible architecture on the exterior, the interior is even more impressive. Detailed painting, vivid stained glass and white statues that seem to oversee the church and its visitors.
A gas well was found on the site of the Basilica. Local legend has it that Father Baker told the drillers where it would be and even though it was a difficult drilling process the gas well was tapped at an unusual depth. The gas well continues to produce still today and helps to offset the heating costs of the building.
Father Baker didn’t stop with this incredible shrine. He also built a home for unwed mothers and an orphanage for parentless youth. He was often called the “Padre of the Poor” according to many sources, including the OLV website. Tours can be scheduled, but a public tour is held every Sunday at 1:00pm. Other locations near by the OLV Basilica are South Park and The Buffalo Botanical Gardens. A visit to this area is an entire day of sight-seeing and inexpensive too!
Allegany State Park is an all season destination, sitting a top 65,000 acres between Salamanca New York and Bradford Pennsylvania. The park opened in 1921 after New York State acquired 7,000 acres. The first permanent cabins were built in 1925. Before that, campers used WWI military surplus tents.
Letchworth State Park is over 14,000 acres of trails, woods, waterfalls and an incredible gorge which has earned it the nickname of “Grand Canyon of the East”. The area was originally the home of William Pryor Letchworth. In 1906 he offered his land to New York State and in 1907 the park opened.
The Glen Iris Inn, originally the home of William Pryor Letchworth , now serves as a restaurant and a guest house, available for overnight stays and special events. There is a museum that pays tribute to Letchworth as well as the Seneca Nation and Mary Jemison who occupied the area as well before selling the land to The Holland Land Company. Mary Jemison’s story is an incredible one and she is buried in the park with her grave marked by a statue of her, “The White Woman of the Genesee”.
The Buffalo and Erie County Naval Park is located at One Naval Park Cove in downtown Buffalo. It is home to three vessels, the USS Little Rock which is a cruiser, the USS Sullivans a destroyer and the USS Croaker, a Gato Class submarine.
The USS Little Rock was built in 1944, commissioned in 1945 and decommissioned in 1976. These style ships were known as “Cleveland Cruisers” and it is the last one of its kind and on display right here in Buffalo.
